Well, isn't this special
Abbas said that at Aqaba, Bush promised to speak
with Sharon about the siege on Arafat. He said
nobody can speak to or pressure Sharon except
the Americans.According to Abbas, immediately thereafter Bush
said: "God told me to strike at al Qaida and I
struck them, and then he instructed me to
strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am
determined to solve the problem in the Middle
East. If you help me I will act, and if not,
the elections will come and I will have to
focus on them
First, what kind of idiot needed God, or anyone for that matter, to tell him that he needed to go after Al-Queda? Is this why he did not concentrate on terrorism until after 9/11 - he was waiting for further instructions? And does that imply that he believes that God wanted 9/11 to happen? After all, if God did not want al-Queda taken out until after 9/11, there must have been a reason, correct? And since God is, well, God, he must have known what al-Queda was planning? And if God wanted Bush to remove Saddam, then why didn't God tell, well, anyone else? Like the heads of all of the major Churches that came out against the war? Does God not like them? Are they bad conversationalists? Couldn't God fit them into his schedule?
And did God tell Bush to leave out the working poor form his expanded child tax credit? Did God tell Bush to underfund AmeriCorps and his own "no Child Left behind" Act? Is God telling Bush not to support a UN resolution calling for more troops in the Congo?
If I sound snide and contemptuous, it is because I am. If Bush intends to use his "personal relationship" with God to fashion public policy, I feel entitled to point out this his narrow, cramped and peculiar vision of God is not the God I was raised to believe in. If Bush wishes to use God's will as an excuse or an explanation, then I feel compelled to point out that the God I and millions like me believe in has given mankind the gift of free will, and that gift is at the heart of what it means to be a believer. If Bush wishes to use God as a justification, then I feel no compulsion about saying - loudly and often - that the God I and millions like believe in would not approve of some of the positions Bush wishes to justify.
If Bush wishes to highlight his version of Christianity, then I feel compelled to point out that his version of Christianity is not the only one.
Perhaps God had to repeat the message a few times, so Bush could hear it above the whirrr of his treadmill.

and rightly so. This 'God called me' is really frightening, cuz if the Chimp had a complete train of thought, it'd be the shortest trip on record. Smirk is such a sock puppet of Rove, Cheney, Wolfowitz and the rest that he's incapable of thinking for himself. I'm all for anyone's belief in their own faith, but this old world, vengeful "God told me to strike" is nonsense. apparently, Smirk ain't ever read the new testament. It's a pretty shallow concept of Christianity, and it's pornographic to use The Almighty to justify the death of thousands of innocents.
God called Dean to strike the heathen unbeliever, and Dean smote him.

"It's OK to talk to God, but if God talks back, see a psychiatrist."
Posted by: Innocent AbroadI call it "Bizarro Christianity." Do you remember the Superman villain Bizarro? He was an imperfect clone of Superman who looked like a damaged version of the hero, and who spoke in negatives and did the opposite of what Superman would do. Hey, if the shoe fits...
As for the God talking back bit, another blogger (I'm afraid that I forget who) cited Lily Tomlin as saying that (quoting from memory) "Talking to God is called prayer. God talking back is called schizophrenia."

Maybe he prefers chips.

The Congo has large diamond reserves. Isn't it possible that if we were to attempt to restore peace, that there would be accusations that we want to take those resources?
"Isn't it possible that if we were to attempt to restore peace, that there would be accusations that we want to take those resources?"
Not by anybody sane. And, really, if that is the best argument you can make for why saving Iraqis is Goids work but saving Africans isn't ....
Posted by: kevinDoesn't it seem strange that the nineteen hijackers of 9/11 fame were also told by Allah (God?)to sacrifice themselves for him. So, is Bush any better than they or is the religious understanding of both of them a little skewed?
Posted by: redsumacThe hijackers chose to use God in that context, but the issue of Iraq does not concern them. The Iraqi people will be better in the long run.
If Bush wanted to make money for himself and his friends off his position, there are much less obvious and much more profitable ways of doing so than going to war. A handful of small contracts won't mean much to huge companies like Halliburton.
By the way, what's so different about grabbing diamond reserves? Several African nations are already fighting over it and using the diamonds to fund their little wars, so it must be worth something. Diamonds don't require refineries or huge infrastructure either, and the workers and mines are already there. All we'd have to do is seize it on the auspices of a peacekeeping mission.
God told McKinley to annex the Philippines too and look at what happened. Four years of guerilla warfare against a people who wanted their independence after the Spanish-American War.
Posted by: JimWhy is it that when anyone calls upon God, all those who act in less than Godly ways stand up and cheer. Do they really believe that person is Godly, or a I suspect, do they just recognize a kindred spirit?

Posted by: AnonREDSUMAC: Please read this. You think Halliburton is being given a handful of small contracts??
Halliburton's Iraq costs $2 bln so far and rising
Costs incurred by U.S. oil services contractor Halliburton Co. in Iraq have climbed to about $2 billion and are rising, Army spokesmen said Friday, citing the effect of looting and sabotage to the nation's energy infrastructure.
Kellogg Brown & Root, a unit of Houston-based Halliburton, currently holds two contracts, for oilfield repairs and for logistics support services, from which it earns a small percentage as income. As U.S. involvement in Iraq grows longer and more expensive, Halliburton stands to reap bigger profits.
In March, Halliburton was granted, without competition, a contract by the Army Corps of Engineers to repair and restore Iraq's oil fields. As of Sept. 8, the total cost of that contract to taxpayers was just under $948 million, Corps spokesman Scott Saunders said.
That's about $200 million higher than projected just last month, mostly because the U.S. has been forced to import oil and fuels into Iraq, which has the world's second-largest oil reserves after Saudi Arabia. Importing oil, gasoline, diesel and propane costs the United States about $6 million per day. ---
Those small contracts in Iraq for Bush cronies...and then the list, well only a partial list. Note too the desire to privatize the Army andGovt. offices and etc...who do you think is too to get those contracts...and as far as the economy, check out the defense industry and its contracts...no, there is a great deal of money made in war and reconstruction and then too, the matter of "footprint" in the region...a heavy footprint, needed and necessitated for many reasonings, resources being a major. (btw, the diamonds in Congo, if so accessed too easily causes the market to lose value so is controlled for economic reasonings)
