According to this article, it is distinctly possible. According to the authors:
The program allows people who understand ACCESS to change the votes
The program uses three separate ledgers - and does not verify that the information on two of the ledgers is accurate.
The program stores authentication information in an ACCESS database, making changes a matter of simply cutting and pasting.
The program stores all vote related information unencrypted, and in an ACCESS database. (Sorry, but as a programmer, this simply boggles my mind. There is absolutely no excuse for this. None. ACCESS is a joke in terms of, well, everything important to a programmer, including security. The fact that this information is unencrypted is mind boggling. I would fire anyone who designed this mess for me.)
The Audit trail is editable.
Essentially, if this report is true, there is no security in this program to speak of, it is ridiculously easy to change the vote totals, and since the audit trail is easily modifiable, you could conceivably hide any changes you made.
And these machines are in use right now.
This is not a matter of right and left. This is a matter of the integrity of our electoral system. These machines are easily crucible, allow remote access, and provide nothing in the way of reliable audit ability. This is a direct attack on the integrity of the most important part of our democracy: the vote.
