What The?

Tim Dunlop points me to this rather interesting quote from our fearless leader:

Defending the broader decision to go to war with Iraq, the president said the decision was made after he gave Saddam Hussein "a chance to allow the inspectors in, and he wouldn't let them in."

Because Hussein would not let the inspectors back in?

So, we all just imagined the debate how effective inspectors were, and how much time they should be allowed, and the fact that they were actually in Iraq?

Hussein had, in fact, admitted the inspectors and Bush had opposed extending their work because he did not believe them effective.

This is not only a lie, its a stupid lie. Do they really think people are not going to notice? Does Bush even realize what he is saying? Tim lists the possibilities:

This is either a barefaced lie, evidence of a man with the memory span of a goldfish or the first signs of complete mental breakdown.

In any case, Churchill the man ain't. Churchill, at least, would not have insulted our intelligence with such an obvious lie.

They will lie when the truth would serve.

And that, friends, is called insanity.

They do not lie because it is in their interest to lie, they lie because it is in their NATURE to lie.

They just get more and more brazen, don't they? Revisionist history my a$$. Sometimes I think they are just messing with the public to see if we're really as dumb and gullible as they think we are. One big giant focus group, that's us.

This is one I don't think is a lie, just W's attention deficit. Must have missed his Ritalin that day.

It does put a whole different spin on RFK's, "I imagine things that never were and say, 'Why not?'"

I'm OK with the Bush bashing but...as a newbie to this, did Clinton draw a pass on his relationship with the truth?

Err, I fail to see the relevance of Bill Clinton's lies here. Does a Clinton lie make Bush lies okay, or vice versa? If not, then that's not relevant. Appealing to Clinton in this case is nothing more than a weak attempt at diversion.

He meant to say: "British Intelligence has learned that we actually started the war because Iraq wouldn't let weapon inspectors in the country. The matter is now closed."

To TGirsh,

The relevance of a Clinton lie is...as a political indendent I cannot stand any lies from politicians. I find that convservatives and liberals both have selective indignation. In reading through these remarks and comments I feels as if I am "listening to the liberal version of Rush Limbaugh". They had/have a blind hatred of Bill Clinton and feet justified...and I see the same thing from the left directed towards Bush. The truth is apolitical. I'll just wish you all well and keep looking for a new home! :-)

Bill:

Fair enough. I'm not a big fan of political lies either, but they're an unfortunate fact of life. It falls to us to call the politicians out when they do it, and make it abundantly clear that we don't approve.

It's also an unfortunate truth that politicians who tell the truth don't get elected.

I'm sure this will send Hobbs into orbit, but I gotta go with the 'memory span of a goldfish' on this one. Dubya has been in over his head since he was sworn in, and this is just another manifestation of his intellectual shallowness.

Where will they be with out Ari to bail Bush out of his mis-statements and outright lies?

This moron is so stupid that he has no clue. This is not a conscious lie at all.

When he is questioned he has no idea how to respond. That seemed like a reasonable response to someone with the IQ of lettuce

I can't call him a liar here. He is an ignorant evil puppet moron fool.

When this guy has to talk with no guidance from his handlers he always proves that he is in fact mildly retarded.

He should be in a school for "special" people, not the whitehouse
