Frist Aims for Anti-Immigrant Vote

It looks like Bill Frist has decided that he really needs the anti-immigrant vote to be President:
Senator Bill Frist, the Republican leader, introduced a stringent border security bill on Thursday, rejecting pleas from senators in his own party who appealed for more time to finish legislation that would create a guest worker program for foreigners and a legal remedy for millions of illegal immigrants already in the United States.
Mr. Frist said his bill would include several measures already hammered out in negotiations under way in the Senate Judiciary Committee, which had included an increase in the number of border guards, more fencing along the Mexican border and faster deportation of illegal immigrants. But Mr. Frist’s bill would not create the temporary worker program that President Bush has urged to legalize the status of the 11 million illegal immigrants thought to be in this country.
Frist is directly challenging Bush on this issue. And he is doing so in a manner that panders to the anti-immigrant members of his party. His bill only punishes immigrants and it does not include the amnesty or guest worker programs that Bush favors. He is obviously trying to stake out territory for the primaries. And just as obviously, he doesn’t appear to be concerned with actually ending illegal immigration.
Unless the summary left something out, Frist’s proposal does not contain any penalties for the people who employ illegal aliens. The reason illegals come to this country (where, I might add, they pay taxes and contribute to the economy) is for a better life. If employers did not hire them, there would be no incentive to come over illegally. Thus any measure that does not punish the people who hire illegal immigrants harshly is not a measure that is serious about curbing illegal immigration. Frist appears to merely want to demonize illegal immigrants so that he can look tough to the GOP base.

Nothing wrong in being opposed to illegal immigration.
In the first part, you keep leaving out the word ‘illegal’, which should preceed the word ‘immigrant.’ I’m all for immigration, if it’s legal.
But good call on the not punishing employers of illegal immigrants. That would be a good first step.

Make the punishment fit the crime - if you confiscate all of their “illegal” gotten gains, namely the money and possesions that they get here- you’d be surprised at how fast they’d head back to ol’ Mexico.
I think some of you don’t understand why we need imigrants here. I am american part irish my grandparents came through elis island as a imgriant. The point here most people wont work where illegal imigrants would work for example after we kick out all illegal imigrants will you do their job like cut the grass wash dishes or go clean and work for only the minumum wage. You probley wouldnt. But maybe you going to say well theres other imigrants who are legal here who will do the job. Wrong those legal imigrants have good working paper so they wont go for those jobs. We need illegal imigrants to help us out with those low job. But i would send those illegal imigrants are here for no good.
i dont think that the pilgrins applied for a passport or green card at the NATIVE AMERICAN CONSULATE before c0oming to america. as far as i am concerned, if your not native american, you have no right to say anything about illegal imigrants
