The Case Against Duke
by tgirschMarch 17th, 2006
Publius makes a solid objective case for Duke hatred.
Then again, he’s a Kentucky fan, and they’re only marginally better than Duke fans. Maybe one day I’ll make an objective case for Kentucky Wildcat hatred.

of course, i strenuously object to “marginally”. I would have used “exponentially”
You have to understand that I lived in Cincinnati, OH for six years, so I was overexposed to UK fans. In particular, converted UC fans who put away their UC hats and put on their UK hats when UC was doing poorly. Apart from the Bengals, for whom the fans are tremendously loyal, Cincinnati is one of the worst “fair weather fan” cities I’ve ever been to.
But the further into Kentucky I got, the more obnoxious the UK fans became. My boss was from Lexington…
And then there’s the taint of racism on the arena name…
I am assuming you use “Duke” as a synecdoche for all things “Duke basketball”.
Being a life-long Red Sox fan, I am familiar with blind, consuming hatred for a rival sports team. However, while completely justifiable when directed at the Yankees, I find other occurrences a bit petty and immature.
Well, I happen to be a dire-hard NY Yankee fan , a huge Connecticut Husky fan, and my father went to UC (Cincy), wo I root for them as well.
I hate Duke, but primarily for what they did to CT in the 1990s. Payback in 1999 and 2004 has been nice. I’m hoping for even more payback should they meet again in this year’s championship game.
Laettner would be my reason, along with the Duke fans. I am a HUGE UConn fan, and they have their own history with Duke.
Back in 1990, before his Kentucky buzzer-beater, Laettner provided a similar conclusion to UConn’s season.
For Duke haters ut there, you might like this retribution against Laettner the following season.
