    Hee.

No, I think my reading level is a bit above grade school :) I am sure that my wife will love the idea of getting that for the kids, though, just as soon as she is done with the lobotomy :)

May I heap praise upon Chris Fox’s novel, “The Devil’s Halo”? Set in the near future, it picks up shortly after the Bush regime has ended…and proceeds to explore the results of that administration’s policies, worldwide. You know…if this, then that. And the “then that” stood my hair on end.

While you’re shopping, also consider Robert Ferrigno’s latest wherein the top half of the USA is Islamic and the bottom half Bible Belt. Another horrific situation.

If you don’t care about the stigma attached to “comic books”, I recommend Alan Moore’s Watchmen. Assuming you haven’t read it yet. If you have, then re-read it. :-)

If the spirits get a bit low, or if the sense of humour goes missing, anything by Terry Pratchett is worth a try…

If you prefer nonfiction, I highly recommend “The Great Influenza,” by John Barry:

Fascinating story, well written, and in all likelihood a harbinger of what we’re facing in the next year or so.

Own and read the Watchmen — I wasn’t very impressed with it. I will dig up the links, but short story: I never bought the premise and never understood why anyone in the story, especially Ozmandyous, did.

Read and liked the western, haven;t read the Great Influenza. So that goes on the list, thanks

    mjc

Read and loved Snow Crash, but none of the non-fiction titles. On the list with them, thanks.

    Stomy

Read that and liked it, thanks.

    Some of us own it.

Returning to some semblance of normalcy: anybody here into the Stephen King “Dark Tower” series? I read the first one, and, while I thought it had some interesting points and was an impressive achievement for a 19-year-old (as he was at the time), it was deeply confused and not very interesting. But everyone else treats him like a cross between Tolkien and Homer the blind bard of the gods. What’s the big deal?

I am still working through this list.

Sadly I broke my rule and just bought three new books:

A Max Weber essay compilation, The Road to Serfdom by Hayek and “The Moynihan Report and the politics of controversy”

    I have a problem.

“State of War : The Secret History of the CIA” by Jim Risen. Blames the whole mess on “Duck” Cheney and Rumdum, who are really running the country. I even felt a little sad for Condosleaza Rice, having to suffer affronts to her position and dignity. Just remember - uninformed deniability.
