Miami Strikers Win
From the SEIU:
Today, May 1, 2006, UNICCO Service Company and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 11 entered into a Settlement Agreement in connection with the ongoing labor dispute at the University of Miami.
Under the terms of the Settlement Agreement, the parties agreed to conduct an impartial process to verify the majority of employees’ interest in collective bargaining representation by the SEIU. This verification process will be conducted by a neutral third party, the American Arbitration Association (AAA) and completed no later than August 1, 2006. Both parties have agreed that a majority will be recognized with at least 60% workforce voting to authorize representation by the SEIU. SEIU and UNICCO also agreed to a code of conduct and behavior which will govern the verification process.
As part of the Settlement Agreement, striking employees will return to work on May 3, 2006 and unfair labor practice charges filed by both parties will be immediately withdrawn from the National Labor Relations Board.
“This would not be possible without the incredible support of the faith-based community, the students, and the faculty at UM. This is a victory for Miami, and an important first step to ensure that work pays in South Florida,” said SEIU President Andy Stern.
Notice that the janitors agreed to a process that requires a super-majority to certify the union as opposed to a NLRB sanction election which would require only 50% + 1 to gain certification. That right there tells you how awful the NLRB process really is. If their elections were actually free and fair and if companies where actually required to keep their hands out of them and punished companies that didn’t follow the rules do you think that workers would choose a process that requires 60% approval over one that requires 50% approval?
Yeah, me neither.

If you were actually worried about fair you would demand that all unions stop sending money to the democrats. Unions don’t generate one dime on their own. Unions exist to send money to liberal democrat campaigns. Keeping worthless people employed is only one way they continue to channel the money from their membership into the hands, ultimately, of the DNC.
