Training

So this upcoming Saturday is my annual baseball outing in Milwaukee. This is the ninth year in a row that we’ve done this. And I always tell people that this is the one day of the year when I get that kind of deep-down body drunk that one can only get from starting early, and drinking slow and steady all night long. This has the unfortunate side effect of making Sunday a rough day, especially when you consider that I have a plane ride to look forward to that day.
So starting last year, at the recommendation of a friend who is a veteran of celebrations involving binge drinking, I decided to undergo “training” for the week before the outing. The training regimen consisted of having at least one drink every day, ramping up as “showtime” got closer. And it worked like a champ. Sunday was considerably less painful.
This year, however, I forgot to start the training until Saturday, and didn’t really start it in earnest until Monday. So Monday was one beer. Yesterday, three beers. Today is supposed to be five beers, but I’ve just started beer #4, and I don’t want any more beer! I’m not even buzzing, I’m just sick of beer.
This is a problem, because I leave tomorrow. And tomorrow evening, there will be drinking. Real drinking, not “training” drinking. And I don’t really expect that drinking to stop until early Sunday morning. Remember, I’m going to the drunkest city in America (a dubious honor which I can tell you the residents wear like a badge of courage).
Could be another painful Sunday for me.
