A Hole in The City

Since ABC thought to debase today with a fictional political hit piece, I thought I would share my favorite piece of art about 9/11 as an antidote. It’s a kind of lament and a kind of affirmation; sad but not broken. It’s also kind of a ghost story. But I suppose every story about tragedy is a kind of ghost story. It’s well worth the few minutes it will take you to read.

    It’s a remarkable story.

It feels exactly like what the city felt like at that time. It’s very hard to go back to that time; I’d been avoiding it yesterday. But this is what it was like.

I had a friend like Mags. She had a job interview that morning in the WTC. Needed the job. Luckily, she hadn’t left the house before the towers fell. She’s doing OK, but it wasn’t easy for anyone.

(The ghosts are a bit much, but I like the connection to the earlier tragedies. And yes, NYU now owns and operates the building that was once the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, right on the edge of Union Square. It isn’t marked. The rest is just right.)
