Christmas Lyrics of the Day
Posted by Kevin

Today’s song is Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Primarily becasue Tom choose it as one of his worst Chrismas songs. But he thinks Springsteen is bad, so how much taste can he have? The Pretender’s version of this is particularly nice.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
our troubles will be out of sight

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
our troubles will be miles away.

Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself A merry little Christmas now.

The song originally came out during World War II, and as such had slightly different lyrics. It was originally “Next year all our troubles will be out of sight” instead of “From now on our troubles will be out of sight.” The original conclusion did not feature “hang a shining star upon the highest bough,” but “Until then we’ll have to muddle through somehow.” Moving, and fitting–and with our current war now stretching on longer than WWII did, appropriate even now.

#1, It’s not so much that Springsteen is “bad” (in fact, I like many Springsteen songs); it’s just that he can’t sing, and that he should never, ever attempt a Christmas song.

#2, My primary objection to this song is that it ought to be called “Have Yourself and Extremely Depressing Little Christmas,” or at best, “Have Yourself a Melancholy Christmas.” There’s something to be said for irony, of course, but there’s nothing the slightest bit “merry” about the song, and I’ve always hated that.
