So I have some gift cards and the like to burn. Anyone read a good book lately? History, sf, science for a preference …

I got the two Greg Rucka “Queen and Country” novels for Christmas, “A Gentleman’s Game” and the other one (whose name currently escapes me). I ended up staying up really late to finish “A Gentleman’s Game” in one sitting, which is why I can’t tell you the name of the other one because I had to put it away until I can devote an entire weekend to it. But then on the other hand “Sandbaggers” was my favourite TV series ever, so maybe my tastes are different than yours.

Try Alistair Reynolds Pushing Ice or any earlier work. SF.

    You’ve probably already read:
    Max Barry’s “Jennifer Government”
Bradley Denton’s “Buddy Holly is Alive and Well on Ganymede” (or anything else of his)
    Powers’ “Galatea 2.2″ and
Jonathan Lethem’s “As She Climbed Across the Table”, “Gun, with Occasional Music” and/or “Girl in Landscape”,
but, if not, all are excellent SF novels.

If you haven’t done so, read Animals in Translation by Temple Grandin. Not sci fi, it just feels like it.

I’ve got a few. Apolitical: “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel, “The God of Small Things” by Aruhndati Roy, “City of Bones” by Martha Wells or “A Suitable Boy” by… I can’t remember his name. Max Berry books are good too, so Cavjam is right about Jennifer Government and another book called “Syrup.”

Political books: “Conservatize me” I heard was supposed to be great, but I haven’t gotten to it yet.
