How You Go Out

K-Lo:

I think you have your reason there. Disagree as we do, Elizabeth Edwards really cares about politics. I believe she believes in Edwards 2008 and wants him to run and that’s why he’s staying in. I have no idea what he wanted to do, but you’ve got to figure if he offered to drop out, she shot it down.

Ezra:

There’s a sort of subtle insinuation that sick people should crawl back into their caves and stay there till they either die or get better. But when you hear the Edwards’s discuss the idea that her cancer is now incurable, that it’s not something she will get better from and so not something where they can hit pause, wait for it to pass, and then resume their lives, you have to think that the question they’re asking themselves is not how can Elizabeth best get well, but how would they like to spend the rest of their years. And knowing her even casually, I’m not surprised to learn the answer is “fighting.”

They are both right. And it is inspiring. Cancer killed my Grandfather, but he kept doing the things he loved to do and cared about until the day the cancer took the ability away. He continued to work for the Church for as long as his body held out. My Grandfather gave me my love of politics. He was a member of the GOP machine, such as it was, in Chicago, and some of my fondest memories in life are of talks and arguments with him. At the end, when the medicines and the tubes had taken his voice away, he was sitting in the hospital watching the TV. One of the talk shows was on and my Grandfather suddenly got very agitated. he couldn’t talk, so everyone in the room rushed around trying to figure out what was bothering. And then I looked up and noticed that someone was taking the Democratic side in the discussion. I got everyone to shut up and told him that he was wrong, the speaker was right. He smiled and threw up his hands in exasperation at his dirty hippie grandson. Grandpa still had the fire, even at the very end of his life.

May Elizabeth Edwards have the same.
