Okay, even if (for the sake of argument) we were to accept the premise that Thomas’s ruling on the race-based school assignment case was wrong, what the heck does that have to do with the credibility of the sexual assault charges Anita Hill made?

There is a real argument against the net-effects of desegregation, btw.

It is possible that desegregation has created, or helped foster the creation of, people like Clarence Thomas. Desegregation, as the argument goes, has, in effect, siphoned off the elite black intellectual achievers and removed them from their communities. Once part of the conservative establishment, these minds become co-opted and end up working for the agenda of those who prosper from the oppression and disenfranchisement of the communities the black elite were once a part of.

This argument follows the idea that blacks should have developed complete self-sufficiency before integrating. It’s pretty clear how Malcolm would classify Thomas…

In an extrapolated sense, this is why I decided not to teach for Kaplan and other expensive services that provide aid to those who can afford it, and are presumably already at an advantage, at the expense of those who can’t afford such services.

I’m not saying that I fully support this argument in the specific terms to which it would apply to this subject, or that this is what Thomas is implying with some of his statements. But, the perspective does merit mention in a discussion like this.

    I believed her then.

What did Ellen Goodman say that is supposed to change anyone’s mind about Clarence Thomas?

  5. tgirsch

Nothing. Clarence Thomas is a hypocrite who benefited profoundly from affirmative action, yet now would deny those benefits to others; this is true no matter what Goodman says about him.

  6. Fred

“Clarence Thomas is a hypocrite who benefited profoundly from affirmative action, yet now would deny those benefits to others;”

Would a white man be a hypocrite if he benefited from segregation and then decided that it was wrong to discriminate because of race?

  7. tgirsch

Would a white man be a hypocrite if he benefited from segregation and then decided that it was wrong to discriminate because of race?

If he didn’t relinquish the benefits he received explicitly because of segregation, then yes.

  8. Fred

“If he didn’t relinquish the benefits he received explicitly because of segregation, then yes.”

How is that to be done? According to you libs, just being white gives an unfair advantage. How is that supposed to be changed?

Is Clarence Thomas supposed to return his diploma and anything else you claim he got through affirmative discrimination?

  9. tgirsch

No, but neither should he deny to others programs that he personally has benefited from and continues to benefit from.

  10. Fred

“No, but neither should he deny to others programs that he personally has benefited from and continues to benefit from.”

So, if a bank robber benefits from his actions he can never deny anyone else the benefit of robbing a bank?

Why would anyone ever change his mind about a subject of moral importance if he is forced to continue to endorse it because he benefitted from a wrong program.
