Someone Please Splain It To Me

So just exactly what is with this hard-on that conservatives seem to have for Fred Thompson, anyway? I certainly understand their frustration with the current GOP field of candidates, but what’s so effing great about Thompson? I mean, if you’re so impressed by vacuous folksy-yet-arrogant rhetoric, why not just eliminate the middleman and nominate Dr. Phil?
He hearkens back to a day when republicans weren’t idiots. You know, small .gov, responsibility, etc. You know, back when they were cool.

But does he really? Does his record as Senator actually back that up? I suspect (without knowing) that his appeal to such people is almost purely superficial.
And, really, if that’s what they’re after in a candidate, why not Ron Paul? (Because Ron Paul can’t win, which brings us back to the original question: what does Thompson bring to the table, other than wider name recognition, that Paul doesn’t?)

Scarey that voters in the GOP can be swayed by an actor to think he is a good ol’ boy when he is a DC insider having been a lawyer, lobbyist, and Senator in DC and now his two sons are lobbyist in DC.
Think the Republicans have some voters that refuse to see Thompson for what he is — the Nixon mole turned lobbyist and an ineffectual Senator except for co-authoring CFR which he now skirts by not reporting.
Not the experience needed to be President IMO.

And a related question. Why isn’t Huckabee leading the polls. He’s charismatic, a southern governor, has impeccable religious right credentials denies evolution, talks the anti-tax game well, and says the right words for the GOP base on Iraq. He looks like a GOP candidate from central casting and yet he’s still way back in the second tier behind a bunch of guys getting beaten by none of the above. What’s with that?

Tim > Maybe Republicans aren’t the narrow-minded racist religious bigots that the left makes them out to be.

[…] Via TPM Fred! Thompson has dropped out of the GOP race. Does this surprise anyone? I’ve blogged about this before, but I just don’t get what it is that anyone ever saw in Thompson, other than maybe that he simply wasn’t 9iu11ani, McCain, or Romney. […]
