All About George

In the middle of another excellent post, Digby quotes something that just seems ridiculous to me:
DAVID BROOKS: … this campaign will not be about George Bush.
MARK SHIELDS: It won’t be about George Bush, if Republicans have their way. I mean, the past eight years, are you better off than you were eight years ago?
What? The GOP candidates, with the exception of Ron Paul, love George Bush. They love his torture, they love his war, they love his tax cuts, they love his cronyism, they love his desire to go to war with Iran, they love his attack on the Constitution and our freedoms. Heck, half of them would campaign wearing a George W. Bush mask if they weren’t afraid that it would seem to obvious a pander in the primary (though, frankly, Thompson should probably just go ahead and do it. I don’t see how it could hurt him at this point.) The fact that Brooks could say such a ridiculous thing, and that Shields could not point out how obviously the Bush love fest in the primaries has been is a sad commentary on the state of our press.
At this point, the only way this next election is not a referendum about Bush is if the Democratic strategists are all idiots and the press actively pushes the GOP preferred narrative into the public consciousness. And what are the chances of that?

“And what are the chances of that?”
uhh, better than 50/50 given my party’s track record and the total dominance of conservatives in print and TV media?
Of course on the other hand, we won’t be nominating a charismaless drone for the first time since 1996 so what do I know?
