Still More On Rev. Wright

Sean Braisted brings on the snark:
I don’t believe that [Wright deserved a “lifetime of service to Christ” award] for one second. After all, I’ve seen tons (or 3-4 minutes worth) of footage which shows him angry and abrasive and hate-filled. Yeah, some might say that taking 3 minutes from a seven year period might not be an accurate measure of what he or his church was about, but we know differently. Context is for American-hating liberals…I want simplicity, and to think that Wright could be more complex than the youtube clips show, well, that is just downright un-American.
Amen, brother. Amen.
I just happened upon this site and thought this might help anyone else who happens by. To put it simply, lots of black folks, African Americans specifically, have grown up in the states taught from experience and preaching to not like, trust, or believe white people. Hate is to powerful a word but it’s damn close. Not all afr. amer. but most I know feel the way they’ve been taught by experience to feel. I had to unlearn it my damn self growing up in the hood. There is no nuance to what Wright is saying. He’s saying the same things brothers always have said since the 60’s. ‘Ain’t nothing angrier than a old black man’ is what we said growing up. We looked up to them and we wanted to be even angrier than them to feel like we were fighting right along with Mlk, Stokely, Malcolm, etc.. I changed my mind when I read Malcolm X. He realized that you had to love yourself and the people that you are fighting for in order to help them. That’s what MLK tried to introduce to Malcolm before he went to Mecca. That meant embracing those who might hate you and reaching out to folks who don’t understand you. Wright has earned his anger but he sure as hell hasn’t been preaching reaching out to make yourself and others understood as his message. He would have to let go of his pain to be strong enough to reach out to those that might hurt him. I did it. It was worth it.
