Hillary Clinton Steps In It
Posted by tgirsch

Via commenter Ted and Obsidian Wings, we find this:

Finally, the Barack Obama campaign has found a big gun to help shoot down Hillary Rodham Clinton’s self-proclaimed foreign policy experience. And he may be the wackiest gun of all: Sinbad, the actor, who has come out from under a rock to defend Obama in the war over foreign policy credentials.

Sinbad, along with singer Sheryl Crow, was on that 1996 trip to Bosnia that Clinton has described as a harrowing international experience that makes her tested and ready to answer a 3 a.m. phone call at the White House on day one, a claim for which she’s taking much grief on the campaign trail.

Harrowing? Not that Sinbad recalls. He just remembers it being a USO tour to buck up the troops amid a much worse situation than he had imagined between the Bosnians and Serbs.

In an interview with the Sleuth Monday, he said the “scariest” part of the trip was wondering where he’d eat next. “I think the only ‘red-phone’ moment was: ‘Do we eat here or at the next place.’”

Clinton, during a late December campaign appearance in Iowa, described a hair-raising corkscrew landing in war-torn Bosnia, a trip she took with her then-teenage daughter, Chelsea. “They said there might be sniper fire,” Clinton said.

Threat of bullets? Sinbad doesn’t remember that, either.

“I never felt that I was in a dangerous position. I never felt being in a sense of peril, or ‘Oh, God, I hope I’m going to be OK when I get out of this helicopter or when I get out of his tank.’”

In her Iowa stump speech, Clinton also said, “We used to say in the White House that if a place is too dangerous, too small or too poor, send the First Lady.”

Say what? As Sinbad put it: “What kind of president would say, ‘Hey, man, I can’t go ’cause I might get shot so I’m going to send my wife…oh, and take a guitar player and a comedian with you.’”

Whoops!

I mean, all politicians engage in BS of some sort or another. But how bad does it have to be that you would resort to something that’s so easily — and so embarrassingly — refuted?

Quoth Hilzoy:

Honestly: there was no need for Clinton to do any of this. She did play a serious policy role in her husband’s administration (even if she didn’t help pass the Family and Medical Leave Act, as she claims.) The only reason for her to inflate a trip with Sinbad and Sheryl Crow into a serious diplomatic mission, and a trip to Northern Ireland involving “a visit to a women’s drop-in centre and two business parks” into helping bring peace to Northern Ireland, is that by pretending to have been more involved in foreign policy than she really was, she can pretend that while Barack Obama isn’t ready to be commander in chief, she is.

This story was on CBS or NBC last night. The reporter who was with Hillary said that Hillary’s claim of coming under fire was false. Hillary had claimed that she was whisked away in waiting cars and it was too dangerous to stay for a waiting reception. The reporter had pictures of Hillary and Chelsea standing around chatting with the people who had come to greet her. Is anyone surprised that a Clinton would lie?

Not very bad, surprisingly or unsurprisingly. At least when it comes to politicians, using rather weak arguments seems to come naturally.

A lot of other people have that problem, too.

If you can find someone with a Brady Bunch donation that don’t use easily confuted statements to move their political agenda, I’ll be quite surprised.

Just for the same of accuracy:

When he made it a point to go on every news media and say he NEVER Heard REV Jeremiha Wright, say those things,,, then a week Later,,,He make his speech and flat out says Yes He was in church when he made those

Obama said he had not heard Wright say the things that were being circulated. He later said - this is not a quote but it’s close enough to make the point - “Did I ever hear him say something controversial from the pulpit? Yes.” So unless you are going to argue that the clipped quotes of Wright we’ve all seen are the only things he’s ever said that someone one disagree with (and thus become “controversial”), those two statements simply do not conflict.

I realize that even that slight tinge of nuance is too much for some people, but they are invited to ponder the matter.

Oh, and if anyone thinks I’m saying this as an Obama supporter, ask Tgirsch. :-)

Oh, and perhaps Sinbad and Hillary just have incongruent interpretations of “being in danger,” they are, after all, from - wait for it - A Different World.

Obama’s people will jump on this, while they ignore the lies he has told. And they’re expert at this. They haven’t noticed the Clintons spectacular governing record, or that Obama adopted Clinton policies on healthcare, fiscal restarint, and bipartisanship, and recites far left cliches and vague rhetorical fantasies. I especailly like his darling baby lamkins foreign policy. But don’t let’s talk about knowledge and achievement. It’s too much work. That deep voice and sing song rhetoric are very sweet, and relieve us from actually having to understand the issues.

After all the one liners I beg to ask: Come let us try to reason together? Which party is the best for the country.
Your answer, it is hoped, will be: THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.
Why? Because, if the Democrats are smart, they will combine the assets of both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama into one unified ticket to trounce the republicans in November. Otherwise, if McCain is elected, we will continue to get the same tired policies which have gotten the economy and our national prestige in hot water. We need to extricate ourselves from Iraq as soon as humanly possible. However, we must be realistic and guide our policies by what is happening on the ground with the troops. This thing has been going on for five years and there seems to be no end in sight. Don’t forget that we also continue to fight in Afghanistan. We need our troop strength for that fight also. Why does the public have to constantly be reminded about Afghanistan? Are they like horses with blinders on? Look at the fact that this war doesn’t even run on WAR BONDS. We need to invest in the future. Let’s have a WAR BOND drive. We are borrowing on our childrens and grandchildrens future. It is time that we had a wake up call. The economy is going in the toilet because we aren’t raising taxes to pay for the war and are
increasing the national debt without investing in our future. We won our wars with an all out effort. If we don’t have the stomach for Iraq, we should get out as gracefully as possible and get back to the staging areas of Northern Iraq and Kuwait. Now, let’s drink that beer.

    Comment 3/28/2008

  28. tgirsch writes:

Sorry, Steve, but I’m not buying the combined ticket approach. First of all, I don’t think either one of them would take the #2 spot. Secondly, I don’t think the idea is as popular as you might think, even among rank-and-file Democrats. Third, I think either Clinton or Obama can beat McCain. His numbers are up for now because he’s been relatively free of scrutiny — he’s not having to fight a primary opponent. If, once the Democratic nominee is selected and the guns all turn to McCain, he continues to poll well, then it will be time to worry; but not before then.

  29. Steve Plonk writes:

Could be, but it is NOW not then. Right now, McCain is ahead in the polls. The convention will straighten things out. Hillary Clinton doesn’t appear to want to throw in the towel. It is still only the last weekend in March. We need to get the Democratic Party to hang together,in the August convention. Superdelegates may decide whose on top of the ticket… Still no answer back on my WAR BONDS proposal.

    Comment 3/29/2008

  30. Ted writes:

In answer to your war bonds proposal, that is also borrowing, just like the gov’t selling standard issue bonds to cover the deficit. The bonds need to be paid off in the future, so where does that money come from? Same place as standard issue bonds. If you want to finance the war now and not pass the cost on to future generations, there is one way to do it. Raise taxes.

    Comment 3/30/2008

  31. Steve Plonk writes:

Ted, you got that right. Let’s suck in the gut and raise taxes. It’s about time we all realized it. Raising taxes is also one of my own options. Bowever, the politicians need to get going on this thing. You can’t run a war on hot air bags.
