From MSNBC.

I’ve taken two train trips this year (from Memphis to New Orleans, and from Boston to New York) and loved both. It’s a great, hassle-free way to travel, especially for trips under 600 miles.

Or even over, although getting sleeping accommodations can get a bit expensive. I’ve logged over 35,000 miles on Amtrak (including a couple of trips on the California Zephyr mentioned in the article) and am entirely prepared to keep going.

In any event, congratulations to MSNBC for noticing the newsworthy fact of Amtrak’s gains, even though it’s something others noticed weeks ago.

On another point about the media, I was disturbed by some things about the related video on Amtrak’s intention to “step up security” come fall. One was that the discussion contained no attempt to justify the increased scrutiny; it was apparently just assumed that any increase in security measures is inherently good. That other is that except for two references in the crawler, they didn’t even say what measures Amtrak was going to take, which would seem to be basic information in such a story.
