Enough of This Election Crap

It’s hockey season, dammit, and the Leafs spoiled the Red Wings’ home opener. The Leafs are supposed to be in a down, rebuilding year, but they really took it to the Wings tonight. They were really aggressive, and never did the annoying “sit back and protect the lead” thing they were so famous for over the last two years.

Of course, it’s only one game, and if not for an outstanding performance by Toskala in net, the Wings probably win by three. But still, it’s nice to see the Leafs actually beat a quality team, and to do so with more than just luck. Here’s hoping they continue to surprise.

Tomorrow, it’s Kevin’s turn, and from the way all the analysts were singing the Blackhawks’ praises tonight, I fully expect them to be doomed. :)

(Oh, and the Phillies beat the Dodgers, but baseball was so last week…)

Yes. I saw that. And actually had to look again! Must be because you have the Sharks coach and goalie. :)

    GO SHARKS!!!

    Go Bruins. :-)

By pulling for a US team, haven’t you just violated the Canadian constitution somehow?

I certainly get criticized often but I have a grandfathering clause in my cheering. When I first became a fan Canada only had Montreal and Toronto in the NHL. Boston recruited heavily from western Canada as those two teams had regional rights to their players. So in reality, I was cheering for a team that sought out players in the area that I lived in.

When did Canada only have the Canadiens and Maple Leafs in the NHL? You’re betraying your age, because you have to go back to the 1960’s for that, if I’m not mistaken. :)

Ahh, hockey. The reason why I wouldn’t be able to “Stump the Schwab”

Since the Knicks suck, I do watch more of the Rangers than I did when I was younger (and the Knicks were a powerhouse). Still, I’m a casual fan at best.

I should join a Fantasy Hockey League, that might help. I’m sure the lady would love that though. I like it when she tries to get involved on Sundays…

“Honey, T.O caught a 60-yard TD, do you own him?”

“Baby, I own everybody - in one league or another.”

hehehe. Vancouver joined in 1970. I was really young but I do remember it. The Bruins won the cup the year (69-70) before they joined. For a while I thought about cheering for the Canucks but all of our hockey broadcasts originated out of Eastern Canada and we never got to see any Vancouver games. And I’m the type of fan who, once I pick a team I stick with it so even though the Bruins have sucked for many, many, maannnnnnnyyyyyy years, I still cheer for em.

How do you think I got to be a Brewers fan? :) For that matter, all of my youth was spent watching the Packers suck, too, though to be fair I really didn’t start getting into football until the late 1980’s, shortly before they turned the corner.

    Big U,

Well that’s dumb luck, you certainly picked the wrong Boston sports franchise to root for. The Red Sox had a long dry spell, obviously, but they’re making up for it now. The Pats just came off a dynasty. And, the Celts are a dynamo, yet again.

That’s like hearing a member of the Wu Tang Clan is coming to perform at your high school prom, and then finding out it’s Masta Killa. Feel free to substitute rock band/crappiest member as necessary.

Actually, as odd as it sounds for a boy who grew up on the Canadian prairies, I’ve been a fan of the Celtics, Red Sox and Bruins for about the same length of time.

Started cheering for the Red Sox over a period of time watching Luis Tiant pitch and Yastremski bat. That got solidified when Rice and Lynn came into the league.

Became a Celtics fan the year before they drafted Bird (now THAT was good timing).

Never have liked New England Patriots (became a Cowboys fan somewhere around 1975 when I read about their coach Tom Landry and the kind of guy he was). I like the Patriots and it was really tempting to switch post-Aikman but I just couldn’t do it. Had to be loyal through thick and thin.

My favorite sports team is the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL. Often call the Green Bay equivalent of the CFL so I can relate to tgirsch.

Marty Brodeur will pass Patrick Roy for most wins ever by a goalie, probably before Thanksgiving (American version). I didn’t realize the # of games played was so disparate, Brodeur playing something like 60 fewer games — to this point.
