Somehow, I missed this post until now. Very nice, and one of your least screed-y screeds. I think gun-rights-with-some-sane-regulation is one of the few real silent majorities in this country.

The only way to feel at all reassured about the gun community is to hope and assume that most of its members don’t really mean what they say - that their childish posturing is just that; that they aren’t reckless enough or at least don’t have the nerve to be as quick on the draw as they pretend

I don't know if I'd call them "gun nuts" in the same ways as those who you refer to in the email, but as a self-professed expert in hip-hop music/culture (and hence the patina of machismo and tough-guy posturing in the form of references to movie quotes uttered predominantly by rich, liberal, white men), I'd say you can quite likely feel largely reassured...

Our standing disagreements about tone aside, you've done a very good job of expressing many of the conflicts I have as a nominally pro-gun liberal. This, in particular:

More and more it seems to me that the worst thing wrong with the pro-gun position is its advocates.

I'm frequently accused of being "anti-gun" and a "gun-grabber" because I'm simply not pro-gun enough for the rank-and-file gun nuts, and because I don't have an immediate reflexive "no" reaction to any and all proposed gun control.

I keep meaning to write a post about just how conflicted I am on these issues, one that really digs deep into the heart of the conflicts, but I know that on that issue, rational discourse simply isn't possible (because, according to them, anyone who disagrees with them on all but the most trivial points of detail is being irrational, and will be piled on almost instantly). I've got a better shot at a calm, reasoned debate on abortion and gay marriage at Lakewood Church than I do at a calm, reasoned gun rights debate in any forum.
