I looked up what the award actually means, because I wasn’t sure. Apparently, the sportman of the year is for the athlete whose performance best exemplifies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement. Well, the “sportsmanship” part is not a suitable definition for a “sportsman” award because it’s saying the sportsman award is for the sportsman most sportsmanlike. As for “the spirit” of achievement, that must be somehow different than achievement itself, thereby differentiating Derek Jeter from Albert Pujols, Joe Mauer, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Alex Ovechkin, Peyton Manning, Adrian Pederson, Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, etc.
